The Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai is a unique place in Europe, visited not only by pilgrims but also by many tourists from around the world. Nowhere else can you find about 200, 000 crosses in one place.
The Hill of Crosses was formed on Jurgaiciai hill, which was considered a holy site. Today, it is one of the most visited sights in Lithuania. Nobody knows exactly how many crosses are on the hill today, but estimates suggest up to 200, 000. Crosses have been placed here since at least the 19th century, and possibly even earlier. During the Soviet era, the crosses were bulldozed, but people risked their lives or freedom to sneak past soldiers to erect more crosses. In this way Lithuanians were expressing their national and spiritual feelings.
